This page provides a link to the final version of the report entitled “A Vision for Physics Higher Education Research in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland”. This report presents an analysis of the Physics Education Research (PER) landscape in higher education in the UK and Ireland, highlighting the importance of this field due to its critical role in enhancing the quality of physics higher education.

This project revealed a vibrant, active PER community who nevertheless faces significant challenges in terms of visibility, recognition and funding. In this report we outline a vision for the future of PER arising from the findings of our study. Our recommendations emphasize the need to build on the momentum gained over recent years, and to leverage the new IoP degree accreditation framework to drive further advancements in physics education. Building on this momentum, we recommend that the PER community actively share initiatives, collaborate to evidence impact, support career development, advocate for institutional recognition across roles, and prioritise securing sustainable funding to strengthen research and dissemination.

The report was funded by the Institute of Physics and authored by Nic Labrosse, Alison Voice, and Helen Heath, on behalf of the IOP Higher Education Group.
