Free Workshop to Tackle Decolonising the Physics Curriculum – 30th July 2025 – Sheffield, UK

Matt Mears

Physics academics, professional services staff, and PhD students are invited to a free, full-day workshop focused on “Decolonising the Physics Curriculum in Higher Education.” The event, supported by a grant from the Institute of Physics Higher Education Group, will take place on Wednesday, 30th July 2025, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the University of Sheffield.

What to Expect

This workshop aims to provide a supportive and engaging environment for all attendees, regardless of their familiarity with the concept of decolonising the curriculum. The day will begin with a foundational session to establish a shared understanding of the goals and motivations behind this important initiative. Participants will then engage in interactive sessions and collaborative activities to explore current challenges and brainstorm innovative ideas.

A key outcome of the workshop will be the initial development of a framework for a “Decolonising the Physics Curriculum” toolkit and resource bank. The organisers hope this valuable resource will eventually be hosted by the Institute of Physics, with attendee input being crucial in its shaping.

Who Should Attend?

The workshop is designed for:
– All physics academics
– Professional services staff who support physics students
– PhD students with an interest in physics education
