Title: Surviving and Thriving as a First-Year Physicist: a qualitative look at the student transition into a Physics degree.
Abstract: The student transition into a University educational ecosystem is a complex and nuanced journey that has been a research subject for many decades. Contemporary studies looking at the transition have placed an emphasis on considering holistically all the various factors, and in many cases, researchers have employed entirely qualitative methodologies. Much of this research has stemmed out of the Social Sciences, leaving the STEM area relatively unexplored. Here, I present an investigation of student experiences of the transition into the Physics undergraduate programme at the University of Bristol. This will include discussion around the process of collecting and analysing qualitative data and highlighting of key results from this work. Additionally, a set of possible interventions will be suggested that could be incorporated in an undergraduate student experience.
