Title
Developing strategies to increase representation in physics

Abstract
Physics is a discipline that is characterized by a persistent underrepresentation of certain demographics, for example women. Although physics organizations around the world (IOP, EPS, AAPT, and APS) have encouraged developing strategies to recruit more women and members of underrepresented minorities, only slow progress has been made. Since both Europe and the US grapple with the demographic imbalance in physics, a comparative study may shed light on some of the contributing factors. In particular, this study seeks to capture the impact of the academic environment of university physics departments using semi- structured interviews to capture the experiences and perceptions of students and staff. In this talk, I’ll discuss the study design, including the techniques used to manage bias in various stages of the qualitative study and some initial results of the analysis.
