I wanted to inform you about a new PhD scholarship program that my University (the University of Edinburgh) is offering. Here are the details:
The Career Development Scholarship targets under-represented groups in Physics, and in the first year we are piloting this for applicants with black or mixed-race black heritage. This follows the recent University Race Report (https://www.ed.ac.uk/about/race-review), and emulates a similar postgraduate scheme run by the Royal Society (https://royalsociety.org/grants/career-development-fellowship/). We aim to recruit two CDS students for intake in the 2026-27 academic year.
Information on the scholarship is here:
https://www.ph.ed.ac.uk/studying/postgraduate-research/funding-studentships/career-development-scholarship
and the application deadline is 24 November 2025. Students can come from the UK or overseas.
This opportunity is for research in any area of physics. I would of course be happy to supervise a PhD doing physics education research. If you know of a student who would be interested in coming here, I’d be happy to chat with them about the program, life here, and connect them with specific faculty (and if they happened to be interested in PER talk with them about that too).
